- Mooring Barges
- Fishing Boats
- Dive Boats
- Trawlers
- Workboats
- Fuel Barges
- Dredgers

- Customs Patrol Vessels
- Pilot vessels
- Fisheries Patrol Boats etc.
Working in the maritime industry is exciting and challenging. It's one of those industries where you are constantly learning. It is also a dangerous industry that is at the whim of weather and sea conditions. It is an industry that works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week all year round and with this in mind it can be very demanding. Working in an isolated environment the crew of a vessel must be ready to respond to any emergency at a moments notice. Therefore appropriate training is essential and vital.
If you are looking for a challenge and for a job that is interesting then working as a General Purpose Hand (GPH)(Deckhand) might just be for you. Like many industries the Maritime Industry faces a shortage of crews in the years to come so now is a great time to become qualified as a General Purpose Hand.
The highest priority for the Maritime Industry is 'safety'. Therefore before you can commence any employment on a commercial vessel you must undergo initial training. This training covers such areas as:
- Seamanship
- Knots, Ropes and Splicing
- OH & S on board a vessel
- Fire Prevention and Response
- Survival at Sea
No previous maritime experience is required to undertake this course and successful completion of the course leads to the nationally recognised qualification of: Certificate 1 in Transport and Distribution (Maritime Operations)(TDM 10107)
Possesion of a GPH certificate will allow you to work in the maritime industry and begin a maritime career with progression that can lead to being the Engineer or Master of a commercial vessel. Additionally you will find it a distinct advantage if you already possess career experience in areas such as:
- Hospitality
- Bar or Restaurant work
- Chef
- Kitchen Hand
- Electrical
- Carpentry
- Plumbing
- Welding
- Fitting and Turning
- Diesel Mechanic, to name a few
